April 6th 2018 marks the 101st anniversary of the United States entry into the first World War.
My great-uncle Roy Jones served in the 353rd Infantry, 89th Division, rising to the rank of Corporal and he performed as a squad leader. Uncle Roy never talked about his combat experiences with anyone in the family, until I came home on leave from the military, now also an infantryman. We connected in a way we never had before and he told me amazing stories about the war.
I inherited his compass, canteen cup and mess kit along with a German belt buckle and several unit history books. The canteen cup was the same design as the canteen cup I was issued in the 80/90’s, and I carried it when I parachuted into Kuwait with the 1st Ranger Battalion during a show of force operation at the end of Desert Storm.
Rest in peace, Uncle Roy. See you on the high ground!
